Title

High performance and scalable central data repository for academic environments

Abstract

Large academic environments are characterized by dozens of thousands of information creators and consumers. These are students, researchers, academic staff, external collaborators, various devices and instruments in the laboratories and computing applications. They all continually create electronic data that must be stored in the centrally accessible repositories in order to be shared among the users community.

The amount of data is often reaching hundreds of terabytes and multiple petabytes. This poses serious challenges to the data management, provisioning, backup, security, access, availability, monitoring, performance and before all cost.

IBM has been recently offering a new advanced system to address these concerns and challenges. IBM Scale Out Network Attached Storage (SONAS) is essentially a high performance and scalable central data repository for files. It is an integrated hardware and software appliance. Today it supports hundreds of billion of files and over 14 petabytes of disks capacity that can be presented and centrally managed as a single name space. Among the key characteristics is the internal optimization with parallel striping using the data dispersion technique. The architecture based on the scale out interface and storage nodes accommodates the cost/performance/capacity data tiers. The HSM engine performs the transparent and automated migrations between tiers based on the user defined policies. SONAS can independently scale performance and capacity.

Backing up the large systems has always been a problem. The key mechanism to support an efficient backup is the inbuilt and ultra fast scan engine in the heart of the global parallel file system GPFS. SONAS includes the functionality to provide intelligent and fast backup to tape library or virtual tape library. The tape can be also used as the last archive tier in the hierarchy to store less frequently accessed data while still being fully accessible through SONAS interfaces.

IBM Scale Out Network Attached Storage is the latest generation and state of the art commercially available enterprise technology. It embraces dozens of years of IBM experience with the storage for high performance computing including the development expertise with HPSS, AFS, HSM etc. Today it presents an exciting choice to massively consolidate scattered and stand alone file servers and NAS filers in the data centers and to support ever rising trends of data growth, speed and collaboration.
